Lyme and La Crosse

Wayne County Lyme & La Crosse Information

Ticks and Lyme Disease are at an ALL Time High

Last year Wayne County had a record number of Lyme cases. Even more disturbing is that this year we have already seen 3 times the number of cases and we are are not even through the summer.

Ticks tend to live in the woods, grassy areas, in bushes, or on animals. When walking pets try to stay in well maintained areas, or paths. Make sure to have their flea and tick meds updated. When camping, hunting, or gardening, use insect repellants and wear covering clothing. Make sure to check yourself and pets daily for ticks.

Please be aware of ticks, use proper protection to prevent tick bites, treat your pets, and your yards.

La Crosse Cases are on the Rise!

Within this year we have had two confirmed cases and seven suspected cases of La Crosse here in Wayne County. This virus is spread through the bite of infected mosquitoes. On average Ohio sees about 20 cases per year. Currently we are double that average at 40 confirmed cases.

Symptoms can present 5 to 15 days the mosquito bite has taken place. Infected people may not show any symptoms while others may have a fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, and lethargy. More severe cases are more common in children under the age of 16. These symptoms may include seizures, coma, paralysis, and may face continued neurological problems after recovery.

To prevent infection, you should avoid being bitten. This includes repellent, avoiding wooded areas, and not keeping standing water around your home, such as buckets, barrels, tarps, and cans.
